The Eldorado Inn Fire - 1933
In the early morning hours on September 15, 1933, a fire started at The Eldorado Inn in Harpursville. Fire Engines from Binghamton and Afton rushed to the scene but arrived too late to quell the roaring flames that leaped seventy-five feet into the dark sky. With no local firefighting equipment, the tavern was doomed from the start. By six o'clock only smoldering smoke ashes remained among the great green trees that had surrounded "The Pride of Harpursville'.
The destruction of such a beautiful building, steeped in the traditions of a past century, left a saddened memory and stirred the businessmen of Harpursville to gather and start a fire company.
